VPNs to avoid

There are other ad-blocker VPNs available, but I don’t recommend them. Here are two VPN services that claim to be ad blockers but that you should avoid:

CyberGhost ad blocker

CyberGhost takes a DNS-based approach to blocking ads and malicious content by redirecting requests to known domains. However, this traffic manipulation raises some privacy questions. More recently, CyberGhost replaced its old standalone ad-blocker toggle with a unified Block Content feature that filters both HTTP and HTTPS traffic.

The new blocker sounds promising, but our testing found it still falls short. CyberGhost struggled with advanced tracking scripts, cookie pop-ups, and YouTube ads, while streaming access to platforms such as Netflix US was inconsistent. Its previous root-certificate approach to HTTPS inspection, which attracted privacy criticism, has also been discontinued.

Even so, the blocker remains underwhelming, and CyberGhost’s speeds are behind those of the leading VPNs – see our CyberGhost vs NordVPN comparison for real-world test results.

PureVPN ad blocker

PureVPN’s built-in ad blocker sounds useful on paper, but testing revealed some serious limitations. The in-app toggle didn’t block ordinary ads or tracking scripts, while support provided little clarity on what the feature actually does.

PureVPN appears to have found a better answer in its standalone Ad Blocker extension. The free Manifest V3-compliant Chrome add-on handles basic banners, pop-ups, and video pre-rolls reasonably well, but don’t expect system-wide protection. It runs separately from the VPN app and only filters traffic within the browser.

PureVPN also has some privacy baggage. The provider previously handed user data to US federal investigators despite advertising a strict zero-logs policy. Since then, it has changed jurisdictions and passed independent KPMG audits of its no-logs infrastructure, improving transparency. However, its slower speeds and unreliable built-in ad blocking still make it a weak choice for all-round privacy.

Free VPN ad blocker risks

You might spot free VPNs promising ad blocking and think you’ve found a bargain, but they rarely deliver what you actually need. Most free services offer weak or gimmicky ad blockers that miss YouTube pre-rolls, sidebar ads, and sophisticated trackers. Some even inject their own ads to generate revenue, completely undermining the ad-free experience you’re after.

On top of that, free VPNs often log and sell your browsing data, throttle speeds, or impose data caps that make clean, uninterrupted browsing impossible.
