Surfshark's key features and tools
Surfshark equips users with various features aimed at bolstering online security and privacy. One of its standout features is multi-hop connectivity, which routes internet traffic through multiple VPN servers for an added layer of security. This feature is particularly beneficial for users who are highly concerned about their privacy or are accessing sensitive information online.
Its other notable feature, CleanWeb, blocks ads, trackers, malware, and phishing attempts, providing a cleaner and safer browsing experience. CleanWeb is a great addition for anyone tired of intrusive ads and concerned about online threats. Additionally, Surfshark's apps include an IP rotator feature that regularly changes your IP address to further enhance anonymity and privacy.
Surfshark’s unlimited device connections mean you can protect all your devices with a single subscription, a feature that sets it apart from many other VPN providers. This is particularly useful for families or individuals with multiple devices. Moreover, Surfshark offers Smart DNS, which helps you access geo-restricted content on devices that do not support VPN configuration.
There is also convenient pause feature that allows users to temporarily disable the VPN connection without completely disconnecting. This feature is particularly useful when you need to access local network devices or services that require your original IP address. With the pause feature, you can quickly resume your secure VPN connection after a short break, ensuring continuous protection without the hassle of reconnecting manually.
The VPN’s Bypasser feature (split tunneling) allows specific apps and websites to bypass the VPN connection, which is especially useful for accessing mobile banking apps without any interruptions. Other standard VPN features include a kill switch, ensuring that all your activities and data remain protected even if the VPN connection unexpectedly drops.

Speed test results: How fast is Surfshark VPN?
Speed is a critical factor when choosing a VPN, and Surfshark does not disappoint. I got impressive speeds when testing Surfshark in the US using the WireGuard protocol. With my baseline speed of 900 Mbps, the server in Seattle delivered speeds of 753 Mbps (a speed drop of only 16%), making it one of the fastest VPN connections I’ve tested.
Similarly, the server in Los Angeles provided speeds of 653 Mbps, which is more than adequate for high-definition streaming and online gaming.
Testing Surfshark’s servers in other locations yielded similarly strong results.
The server in New York reached speeds of 638 Mbps, and the server in London (UK) achieved 557 Mbps. While the speed drop with the latter is more noticeable at 38%, this is understandable given the distance my data had to travel between the US and UK.
These speeds ensure a smooth and uninterrupted browsing experience, whether you’re streaming videos, playing online games, or simply browsing the web.
Surfshark server location | Download speed (Mbps) | Download speed drop | Upload speed (Mbps) |
Seattle | 753 | 16% | 51 |
Los Angeles | 653 | 27% | 51 |
New York | 638 | 29% | 37 |
London, UK | 557 | 38% | 48 |
Surfshark’s impressive speed performance can largely be attributed to its utilization of the WireGuard protocol. WireGuard is known for its efficiency and speed, making it an excellent choice for users who require fast and reliable VPN connections. Additionally, Surfshark’s Nexus technology helps maintain high-speed connections by connecting all servers to a single network, ensuring consistent performance across different server locations.
In real-life scenarios, Surfshark provided a smooth gaming experience on nearby servers, with ping times as low as 29 ms. This low latency is crucial for fast-paced games such as COD: Warzone or Fortnite.
Security and privacy
By routing internet connections through private servers, Surfshark enhances both privacy and security. In addition, one of its key features, CleanWeb, acts as an ad and malware blocker, adding an extra layer of protection against online threats.
Surfshark adheres to a strict no-logs policy, ensuring that user activities are not monitored or stored. According to its policy, Surfshark does not log:
IP addresses
Browsing history
Bandwidth usage
Network traffic
This commitment to privacy is further reinforced by the fact that Surfshark’s servers only collect minimal data during a session, which is deleted within 15 minutes of disconnecting.
Surfshark successfully changed my IP address in various tests, and it did not leak any DNS information or private IP addresses during WebRTC leak tests. These tests demonstrate Surfshark’s robust security measures, ensuring that your real IP address remains hidden and your online activities private.
Furthermore, Surfshark has undergone three independent security audits, including those conducted by Cure53 and Deloitte, which validate its security claims.
Encryption and VPN protocols
Surfshark employs industry-leading AES-256-GCM encryption to protect your personal data. This level of encryption is considered highly secure and is used by governments and financial institutions to safeguard sensitive information. Surfshark’s use of AES-256-GCM ensures that your data remains encrypted and safe from potential threats.
In terms of VPN protocols, Surfshark supports several secure options, including WireGuard, OpenVPN, and IKEv2/IPsec. WireGuard is known for its speed and efficiency, making it an excellent choice for users who require fast and reliable VPN connections. OpenVPN is another widely used protocol that offers a good balance between security and performance.
IKEv2/IPsec is known for its stability and is particularly well-suited for mobile users who frequently switch between networks. The variety of supported protocols allows you to choose the one that best fits your needs. Whether you prioritize speed, security, or stability, Surfshark has a protocol that will meet your requirements.
Kill switch and split tunneling
Surfshark’s Kill Switch feature is a critical component in maintaining user privacy and security. The Kill Switch guarantees the protection of all your activities and sensitive data, even if your VPN connection drops.
There are two options for the Surfshark Kill Switch: ‘Strict’ and ‘Soft’. The ‘Strict’ Kill Switch function blocks internet access without the VPN being connected, ensuring maximum security. On the other hand, the ‘Soft’ Kill Switch is that it doesn’t activate if you manually disconnect the VPN.
Surfshark’s applications include a split tunneling feature called Bypasser, which allows specific apps to bypass the VPN for better performance. This feature is particularly useful if you need to access certain services or apps that do not work well with a VPN connection. By allowing these apps to bypass the VPN, Surfshark ensures a seamless and efficient user experience.
User interface and usability
The design of Surfshark’s user interface prioritizes simplicity and functionality. The applications are small, stylish, and feature flat shades of blue, creating a visually appealing design. The smart design allows the apps to expand and contract to show more or less information as needed, which made it easy for me to navigate and use during my testing.
The Windows user interface is minimalistic and clear, not overcrowded, and includes features like recent connections and the ability to save favorite countries.
The Linux app offers a GUI interface, which provides ease of use unlike many other Linux VPNs that offer only CLI implementation. This graphical interface makes it accessible for users who may not be comfortable using command-line tools.
Although the Mac app may appear cluttered, it ultimately has an appealing appearance and is simple to navigate. In real-world use, Surfshark’s Mac app had speedy connection times and did not experience any connection drops. The Android interface mirrors the overall feel and functionality of its PC version, ensuring a seamless transition between platforms.
Additionally, Surfshark offers browser extensions for Chrome, Firefox, and Edge that provide a streamlined experience for users who prefer to use VPN directly in their browser. These extensions include features like split tunneling, allowing users to bypass the VPN for specific websites.
Setting up Surfshark VPN
The setup process for Surfshark VPN is straightforward, with compatibility across a broad spectrum of devices. It can be summarized in the following steps:
Subscribing
Creating an account
Downloading the app
Logging in
Connecting to a server
This user-friendly approach ensures that even those new to VPN services can get started with minimal hassle.
Surfshark provides setup guides for various platforms, including Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, Linux, Chrome, Firefox, Edge, game consoles, and smart TVs. The guides include video tutorials, step-by-step instructions with screenshots, and explanations of main features.
For Windows, the manual setup using WireGuard involves obtaining a key pair, downloading the WireGuard app, importing the configuration file, and activating the VPN.
The installation process on Linux is simple. It involves downloading a file from the Surfshark website, adding the software repository to the device, and following a few commands in the Terminal.
For Mac, the manual setup with WireGuard includes downloading the app from the App Store, importing the tunnel configuration file, and connecting by clicking Activate.
Setting up Surfshark on different devices involves the following steps:
Android and iOS: Download the WireGuard app from their respective app stores and import the configuration files.
Firestick: Enable ‘Apps from Unknown Sources,’ download the APK file via the Downloader app, and follow the prompts to install.
Apple TV: Configure DNS settings manually with the IP address provided by the VPN service.
Router: Install Surfshark on a router to secure the whole network and bypass website restrictions from the ISP.
Surfshark's server network
Surfshark boasts an expansive network of over 3,200 diskless (RAM-only) servers distributed across 100 countries. This number of servers minimizes the risk of congestion, allowing you to enjoy high speeds even during peak usage times.
Its servers are strategically placed in key locations to allow users to access content from different regions and enjoy a more reliable connection by choosing a nearby server. What's more, the servers utilize reliable hardware with at least a 1Gbps port, with many being upgraded to blazing-fast 10Gbps connections.
Surfshark's servers feature private DNS on each server and leak protection to ensure that your data remains private. Furthermore, the diskless server infrastructure ensures that no data is stored on the servers as everything is wiped upon reboot, further enhancing security and privacy.
The VPN service also provides specialized servers for P2P activities, ensuring fast and secure torrenting. Its static IP servers can be useful for users who need a consistent IP address for specific applications. Static IP addresses are particularly beneficial for accessing remote servers, managing multiple accounts on websites that restrict the number of logins from different IP addresses, and ensuring stable connections for online gaming.
For example, if you frequently access a corporate network or need to maintain a consistent presence on social media platforms, a static IP can help avoid unnecessary account verifications and disruptions. Additionally, static IPs can be advantageous for running personal web servers or hosting online services where a fixed address is essential for DNS settings and reliable connectivity.
Surfshark Nexus is an innovative technology that sets Surfshark apart from other VPN providers. By connecting all its servers into a unified network, Nexus allows for seamless transitions between servers without interrupting your connection. This networked approach enhances privacy and security, and enables features like IP Rotator and MultiHop.
The Dynamic MultiHop functionality is another standout feature of Surfshark’s server network. This double VPN feature allows you to route their internet traffic through two different VPN servers, effectively adding an extra layer of security and privacy. By doing so, it becomes even more challenging for anyone to trace your online activities.
In order to find it within the app, head to the MultiHop server list and look for the “Create Connection” button at the bottom. Clicking it allows you to pick both your entry location (the first VPN server) and your desired exit location (the second VPN server). This creates a personalized multi-hop configuration you can use immediately. If you think you might need this setup again, you can even save it for future use.
This ability to choose which servers to pair is what sets Surfshark apart from its competitors. It is a unique customization option that gives you greater control by allowing you to pair servers that work best for you.
Camouflage and No-Borders Mode
Surfshark’s Camouflage Mode ensures that even your ISP cannot tell you’re using a VPN. This feature is particularly useful in countries where VPN usage is monitored or restricted. By disguising VPN traffic, Camouflage Mode helps maintain user privacy and prevents internet providers from throttling your connection based on VPN usage.
No-Borders Mode is designed to help users access the internet in restrictive regions, such as China, Iran, and Vietnam. By bypassing local internet censorship, No-Borders Mode allows users to enjoy unrestricted access to the web. This feature is invaluable for travelers or residents in countries with strict internet regulations, ensuring they can stay connected and access the information they need.
Both Camouflage and No-Borders Mode demonstrate Surfshark’s commitment to providing a secure and unrestricted internet experience for its users. These features make Surfshark a reliable choice for those who need to maintain their privacy and bypass censorship in challenging environments.
Streaming and torrenting capabilities
With proven efficiency in unblocking popular streaming services, Surfshark is a preferred choice among streamers. By connecting to different servers, you can unlock regional libraries on platforms like:
Netflix | Amazon Prime Video |
Max (formerly HBO Max) | Hulu |
BBC iPlayer | ESPN |
Disney+ | and more! |
This capability allows you to access a vast array of content that would otherwise be unavailable in your region.
In my tests, Surfshark performed exceptionally well, allowing me to watch my favorite shows on various platforms without any buffering or lag. Whether I was streaming the latest seasons of Vikings: Valhalla on Netflix or Peaky Blinders on BBC iPlayer, the connection remained stable and fast, providing a seamless viewing experience.
Surfshark’s ability to unblock geo-restricted content extends beyond just streaming services. It also allows you to access websites and services that may be blocked in certain regions. This makes Surfshark a versatile tool for anyone looking to bypass censorship and enjoy unrestricted access to the internet.
Overall, Surfshark’s streaming capabilities make it an excellent choice for users who want to access a wide range of content from different regions. Its fast and stable connections ensure a smooth streaming experience, making it a reliable VPN service for entertainment purposes. It's also on our list of the best VPNs for streaming Netflix.
Torrenting with Surfshark
Surfshark supports torrenting across all its servers, accommodating popular clients such as uTorrent, BitTorrent, and qBittorrent. This widespread support ensures that users can enjoy fast and secure torrenting without any restrictions. Surfshark also offers P2P-optimized servers in specific locations such as the US, UK, Germany, and Canada, further enhancing the torrenting experience.
Using a VPN like Surfshark for torrenting is essential to mask your IP address and protect your identity, as well as to keep your online activity hidden. This level of privacy protection is crucial for users who want to avoid privacy breaches or potential legal issues for accidentally downloading copyrighted content.
One drawback of Surfshark is that it does not support port forwarding, which could impact seeding efficiency during torrenting. However, this limitation is relatively minor for casual torrent users, and Surfshark remains a good choice for those who prioritize privacy and security while torrenting.
Surfshark's customer support
Offering 24/7 live chat support, Surfshark ensures swift assistance for any issues encountered by users. I tested the live chat and was satisfied with the experience — the agents were knowledgeable and helpful, addressing my queries promptly. This level of responsiveness ensures that you can get the support you need at any time, day or night.
In addition to live chat, you can also reach Surfshark’s customer support via email for more detailed inquiries. I received quick responses to my email queries, usually within a few hours. This option is particularly useful for users who need more in-depth assistance or have complex issues that require detailed explanations.
Surfshark also provides a comprehensive knowledge base with articles, guides, and FAQs to troubleshoot common issues. This resource is invaluable for users who prefer to find solutions on their own or need step-by-step instructions for various tasks.
Overall, Surfshark’s customer support is reliable and accessible, ensuring that you can get the help you need quickly and efficiently.

I tried Surfshark as it was at a good price, but it was a mistake. I am having so many problems with it, the Wireguard is the worst part as it stops me connecting to the internet and I have to use task manager to shut down the service and then I can instantly connect again.
It will sometimes work for a day or so and then it keeps doing the same crap.
Avoid and go with a better company, waste of money!
Mark
I have been using Surfshark on my phone and computer for about a month now.
It has been working flawlessly and I cannot say enough about the security and peace of mind it provides me from the prying eyes of practically every app you use and every internet browsing app.
Mendes
I’ve been waiting 3 days to cancel the automatic renewal.
I subscribed for 1 month and only used it for 2 days, the VPN kept shutting down on Android and on computer it was slow.
The site does not have the possibility to cancel the automatic renewal.
After 30 days they charged me again.
I opened a Ticket and after 3 days of several Emails my account still hasn’t been cancelled.
It was necessary to cancel the Visa to avoid a new charge.
Bruce
Been with Surfshark for years. Now that they’re rated number 1, they’re going downhill fast. Never gave me the opportunity to renew. Reapplied. They then made it impossible to install on my computer without installing windows 10. Customer service was useless. Talked gibberish and took up lots of time. Now their app disconnects periodically on android tv. Protocol solutions USELESS. No response from ss.
Dave
My two year contract with Surfshark is almost over, thank God. While the VPN works reasonably well it can be confusing and frustrating when you want something outside of their presets (eg using IPv6 rather than IPv4). You can’t log in unless you permit Surfshark to load up cookies and then each individual site (including Surfshark) has to be manuallyamended to prevent cookies. So no, I won’t be renewing my contract with them and not will I be recommending them to anyone else.
Bob
Why do most reviews about surf shark say they are based in BVI?? They are based in Netherlands, a 14 eye country, and they even publish it on their website…
Tom Arneson
Hi Bob. We have corrected the typo in this review. The reason is that in October of this year (just a few months ago), Surfshark switched jurisdictions to The Netherlands. We’re working to get this updated across the site.
Don
My internet speed is 200mg up and how much would I get on my fire stick with your service
Kirsten
I don’t understand this, if you “install your VPN on a router, you would probably be better off with a service like NordVPN, which has better router support.”
I’m really interested in Surfshark, would I have to use NordVPN instead?
Tom Arneson
No, you should still be perfectly fine with Surfshark because you definitely do not need a VPN on your router if you already have the VPN installed on your computer, phone, tablet, etc. And if you are one of the few people who want a VPN on your router, however, you may want to first look into whether or not Surfshark or NordVPN support a VPN on your router model. Not all routers will even work with a VPN.
