Microsoft is investigating user reports of significant reboot issues introduced by a recent Windows update. The affected update, KB5043145, was released as a non-security preview on September 26, 2024, for Windows 11, version 22H2 and 23H2. After installing the update, users have reported that their devices may restart multiple times, encounter blue or green screens, or become unresponsive.
Reboot problems
Shortly after the update was made available, Microsoft began receiving feedback indicating that some devices were restarting repeatedly and experiencing issues such as blue or green screens. In some instances, the Automatic Repair tool has been triggered, attempting to diagnose and fix boot issues. Additionally, some users have reported being prompted for BitLocker recovery.
The problem appears to affect clients using Windows 11 version 22H2 and version 23H2 across all editions. Microsoft has stated that server editions are not impacted. Users who have experienced these reboot problems are encouraged to submit feedback via the Feedback Hub to assist Microsoft in identifying and resolving the issue.
Microsoft acknowledged the reboot issues on September 27 and is actively investigating the matter, though no timelines for a fix were provided. A statement from Microsoft notes: “We are currently investigating this issue. We will provide an update when more information is available.”
What's New in KB5043145
The KB5043145 update introduced a range of new features and improvements to Windows 11, including enhancements to the taskbar, settings, Windows Share functionality, lock screen, and Start menu:
- Taskbar: Users can now share local files directly from search results in the taskbar's Search box.
- Settings: The Delivery Optimization settings have been updated to match the Windows 11 design aesthetic.
- Windows Share: The search box has been removed from the Windows Share window.
- Lock Screen: Media controls now appear at the center of the lock screen when media is playing.
- Start Menu: The Sign-out command has been added to the account manager, making user switching easier.
Additional bug fixes were also included, addressing issues with Microsoft Edge, Task Manager, and Windows identity protection, among others. The update also introduced the ability to manage a Copilot Pro subscription directly from the Settings app.
End of service notice
It is important to note that Windows 11 Home and Pro editions, version 22H2, are set to reach their end of service on October 8, 2024. After this date, only security updates will be provided, and non-security, preview updates will no longer be available. Users are advised to update to the latest version of Windows to continue receiving all updates.
Enterprise and Education editions of Windows 11 will continue to receive full support beyond the October 8 deadline.
The reboot issues introduced with the KB5043145 update have not yet been fully resolved, so it might be a good idea to hold off from updating until the issue has been remediated.
