Google Play has launched a new “Verified” badge for VPN apps, aiming to help users identify services that meet stringent security and privacy standards. The badge is awarded to VPNs that pass the Mobile Application Security Assessment (MASA) Level 2 validation, ensuring compliance with Google's Play safety guidelines.
The new badge system builds on previous efforts to improve app security and transparency. It complements the “Independent Security Review” badge introduced last year, which marked VPN apps that had undergone independent security audits under the MASA framework.
The MASA program, part of the App Defense Alliance (ADA) initiative, assesses apps on data privacy, cryptography, authentication, session management, and code security. The new “Verified” badge goes a step further, signaling that a VPN app not only meets security benchmarks but has actively invested in user safety.
What it takes to earn the “Verified” badge
To qualify for the badge, VPN developers must meet the following requirements:
- Successfully complete MASA Level 2 validation
- Operate under an Organization developer account
- Meet target API level requirements for Google Play apps
- Have at least 10,000 installs and 250 user reviews
- Be published on Google Play for at least 90 days
- Submit a Data Safety section declaration, including opting into an independent security review and encryption in transit
While these are the core criteria, Google notes that additional factors contribute to the final evaluation.
Several VPN providers, including NordVPN, hide.me, and Aloha Browser, have already received the badge, reinforcing their commitment to security.
Google's introduction of the “Verified” badge marks another step in improving app security on its platform, which is not free of risks like spyware apps or free VPN tools turning users' devices into proxies for malicious traffic. Combined with previous measures like the Independent Security Review badge and the Data Safety Section, this initiative helps users make informed decisions when choosing VPN services.
For developers, earning the badge enhances visibility in search results and on app detail pages, potentially attracting more security-conscious users. Google encourages VPN developers to apply for verification in time and be among the first to get the badge.
Users should note that, depending on their region, it might take a few days or even weeks for them to start seeing badges on Google Play app entries as the new system is being gradually rolled out.
