Discord is rolling out a new age assurance system that will classify most users as adults or teens without requiring them to upload a government ID or take a selfie.
The company says more than 90% of users will be assigned an age group automatically, while those who need to confirm they are adults can choose from several methods, including credit cards, Apple App Store or Google Play age-range sharing, Google Wallet, AgeKey, video selfies, or ID scans.
The changes were announced by Discord co-founder and CTO Stanislav Vishnevskiy, months after the company delayed its global age assurance rollout following user backlash over privacy concerns.
Discord operates one of the world’s largest communication platforms, with more than 150 million monthly active users across gaming, education, hobbyist, and professional communities. Its young user base has also placed it under increasing regulatory pressure as governments introduce stricter age assurance and child-safety requirements.
Under the new system, Discord automatically places accounts into an Adult Age Group, Teen Age Group, or leaves them Unconfirmed when there is insufficient information.
Its age estimation model analyzes account-level signals such as account age, the servers and communities an account is connected to, associated games, and general activity patterns. Discord says it does not inspect private messages, calls, or other user content when making the determination.
Adults who are misclassified or remain unconfirmed can manually verify their age from User Settings > Account Status.
The privacy-sensitive part of the rollout is how those checks are handled. Discord says it does not receive users’ card numbers, IDs, facial scans, or exact dates of birth from verification providers. Instead, vendors return only an age-group result.
Credit card verification is routed by k-ID to Stripe, while Apple and Google can share an age range without exposing a birthdate. Google Wallet can also confirm age using an existing passport-backed credential while keeping the underlying ID with Google.
Discord says facial age estimation must run entirely on-device so biometric data never leaves the user’s phone, while third-party providers are required to delete submitted verification data after determining the user’s age group.
The new design follows criticism of Discord’s earlier approach and comes after a 2025 breach involving a customer support provider that exposed tens of thousands of government ID images submitted during age-related appeals. Discord says it has since retired the previous manual review process.
Teen and unconfirmed accounts can continue using core Discord features such as direct messages, voice calls, and non-age-restricted servers, but receive additional protections around sensitive content, stranger interactions, and age-gated spaces.
The rollout is taking place globally this week, although Discord says its automated age estimation model is not currently available in the UK and Australia, where different regional requirements apply.
