Meta has announced that Instagram will discontinue support for end-to-end encrypted (E2EE) messaging starting May 8, 2026, effectively shutting down the platform’s optional encrypted chat feature.
Users with affected conversations will be prompted to download their encrypted messages and media before the feature is removed.
The announcement was made through an Instagram help page update explaining the upcoming change and how users can preserve their existing encrypted conversations. According to the company, people who have participated in E2EE chats will begin seeing instructions inside the app on how to export any messages, images, or files they want to keep before the cutoff date. Some users may also need to update the Instagram app to the latest version to access the download tools for affected chats.
End-to-end encryption on Instagram was introduced as an optional feature designed to protect private conversations from third-party access, including Meta itself. In E2EE systems, only the communicating devices hold the cryptographic keys needed to decrypt message or call content. This means that even the service provider operating the platform cannot read message contents while they are in transit or stored on its servers.
Instagram’s documentation explains that each device participating in an encrypted chat generates a unique cryptographic key used to secure the conversation. When a message is sent, the sending device encrypts the content before transmission, ensuring that only devices with the correct key, belonging to participants in the conversation, can decrypt and read it. The same encryption model applies to audio and video calls within those encrypted threads.
While Meta emphasized that encrypted messages were inaccessible even to the company, the feature included exceptions for user-initiated sharing. For example, participants in a chat could voluntarily report messages to Meta for moderation or safety purposes, effectively sharing portions of the conversation outside the encrypted environment.
Instagram is one of Meta’s largest social platforms, with well over a billion monthly active users worldwide. The service serves as both a social media network and a messaging platform, enabling users to exchange direct messages, multimedia content, and make voice or video calls. Meta has gradually expanded Instagram’s messaging capabilities over the years to more closely resemble standalone messaging apps like WhatsApp and Messenger.
Meta has not provided a detailed public explanation in the announcement for why E2EE support is being discontinued on Instagram.
For users who previously enabled encrypted chats, the main impact will be the loss of access to those conversations once the feature is removed. Meta advises users to follow in-app prompts to export their messages and media before May 8, 2026. After the deadline, the encrypted threads will no longer be accessible.
