Nym Technologies has officially launched NymVPN, a new virtual private network (VPN) that it claims to be the most secure on the market.
Unlike conventional VPNs, NymVPN uses a decentralized, noise-generating mixnet to shield users from AI-powered surveillance, metadata tracking, and censorship.
Who is Nym?
Nym Technologies is a Swiss-based company specializing in decentralized privacy solutions. Founded by privacy researchers and activists, the company has developed the Nym mixnet, an advanced encryption system designed to resist state-level surveillance and AI-powered tracking. Nym's team includes CEO Harry Halpin, a well-known cryptographer and advocate for internet freedom, and Chelsea Manning, a former intelligence analyst who now leads security efforts at Nym.
Backed by over a decade of academic research, Nym has worked closely with experts from MIT, University College London, and KU Leuven to develop its privacy-first infrastructure. While the company has previously focused on research and network development, NymVPN marks its first major consumer product, bringing its advanced anonymization technology to the general public.
NymVPN officially launched
The VPN launch event featured prominent privacy advocates, including Chelsea Manning, alongside representatives from Doctors Without Borders and Wikileaks. Nym CEO emphasized that existing VPNs fail to protect metadata — an increasingly valuable resource for intelligence agencies that now also employ powerful AI technologies, as well as for cybercriminals. Metadata, which includes timestamps, connection durations, and routing information, can reveal a user's online behavior even if their traffic is encrypted.
A different approach to online privacy
NymVPN aims to tackle this vulnerability by integrating mixnet technology, a system that encrypts and “mixes” user data packets with artificially generated noise. Unlike centralized VPNs that process all user traffic through a single provider-controlled server, NymVPN's decentralized architecture distributes traffic across multiple independently operated nodes. This design prevents any single entity — including Nym itself — from tracing a user's online activity.
The service offers two modes:
- Anonymous Mode: A five-hop mixnet system that maximizes privacy by encrypting and scrambling data with traffic from other users. This mode is designed for highly sensitive activities such as encrypted communications and cryptocurrency transactions.
- Fast Mode: A high-speed two-hop network using AmneziaWG™, which provides a balance between speed and security for everyday browsing and streaming.

Zero-knowledge proofs and censorship resistance
NymVPN employs zero-knowledge proofs (“zk-nyms”) to prevent even the company itself from linking payments to VPN usage. Users can sign up and pay for the service without providing any personal information, a feature rarely seen in the VPN industry. This is particularly relevant for individuals in regions where VPNs are restricted or monitored.
The network is powered by the NYM token, which rewards independent node operators who contribute to the infrastructure. While users can pay in traditional currencies, all payments are converted into NYM tokens to ensure unlinkability between transactions and VPN usage.

“NymVPN marks a split between Big Tech's exploitative control of the internet and a new vision where privacy is a right, not a privilege,” Halpin stated. “This technology was built with support from the original cypherpunks and the world's top cryptographers to defeat even government-level surveillance.”
The service is now available for Android, iOS, macOS, Linux, and Windows, with U.S. pricing starting at $5.49 per month.
NymVPN's bold claims of unmatched security will be put to the test in our upcoming in-depth review.
