Google has officially begun rolling out a new wave of AI-powered features in Gmail, signaling the platform's entry into what it calls the “Gemini era.”
The upgrade brings a suite of generative AI tools aimed at transforming Gmail into a proactive inbox assistant, helping users manage high-volume email traffic with greater speed, clarity, and efficiency.
Central to the update is the integration of Google's Gemini 3 model, which now powers key Gmail features including conversation summarization, inbox search via natural language, and intelligent writing aids. Several of these tools are now available to all users at no cost, while more advanced capabilities are reserved for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers.
One of the headline features is AI Overviews, designed to streamline email digestion and inbox search. The tool automatically summarizes lengthy email threads, highlighting key points so users no longer need to sift through dozens of replies. Gemini’s natural language understanding also enables users to ask contextual questions such as “Who was the plumber that gave me a quote for the bathroom renovation last year?” and receive precise answers synthesized from their inbox. AI Overviews for conversation summaries are available immediately to all users, while the question-asking feature requires a paid AI plan.

Another core addition is a set of generative writing tools aimed at accelerating email composition. These include:
- Help Me Write: Generates email drafts or refines existing ones based on user intent.
- Suggested Replies: A context-aware evolution of Smart Replies, offering more personalized, one-click responses that adapt to the user’s writing style.
- Proofread: Provides advanced grammar, tone, and style suggestions to ensure polished messaging.
Help Me Write and Suggested Replies are now accessible to all Gmail users, while the Proofread function is limited to subscribers of Google's premium AI tiers. Google also announced that in February, Help Me Write will incorporate context from other Google apps, such as Calendar and Docs, to further personalize email drafts.
Alongside content generation, Gmail is introducing AI Inbox, a feature still in limited testing that aims to intelligently surface critical messages and action items. Drawing on user behavior and message metadata, such as frequent contacts or inferred relationships, AI Inbox can prioritize tasks like upcoming appointments, bills, or urgent requests. Google emphasizes that this processing occurs with end-to-end privacy safeguards, assuring users that data remains under their control.
The initial rollout of the new Gmail experience begins today in English for users in the US, with broader language and regional support expected in the coming months.
