NordVPN has announced NordWhisper, a newly developed VPN protocol designed to help users bypass network restrictions while maintaining strong encryption and security standards. The protocol, which mimics regular web traffic, is aimed at ensuring reliable internet access in restrictive environments where traditional VPN connections are often blocked.
The NordWhisper protocol was created in response to growing restrictions on VPN usage, particularly in managed networks like public Wi-Fi hotspots, workplaces, and countries with strict internet policies. Unlike conventional VPN protocols such as OpenVPN or WireGuard, which can be detected and blocked due to their distinct traffic patterns, NordWhisper uses web tunnel technology to blend in with normal web activity.
The feature is similar, at least in functionality and results, to Tor’s WebTunnel bridges, the Shadowsocks protocol, Obfsproxy, and Psiphon. It should also be noted that WireGuard offers similar cloaking using UDP over TCP for those who care to configure it.
NordVPN has positioned this protocol as a solution for users facing disruptions due to restrictive network policies — a growing issue that affects individuals working remotely, traveling, or living in regions with internet censorship.
NordWhisper’s logic and limitations
NordWhisper leverages obfuscation techniques to avoid detection by network filters. Many restrictive networks block VPN connections by identifying specific characteristics of VPN traffic, but NordWhisper bypasses this by disguising VPN traffic as standard web traffic. This allows users to connect securely to NordVPN servers without triggering VPN-blocking mechanisms.
While obfuscation is not a new concept, NordWhisper is specifically optimized for scenarios where existing methods fail. However, NordVPN warns that because of the underlying technology, NordWhisper may be slower than other protocols in some cases. As a result, users are encouraged to switch to other protocols when network restrictions are not an issue.
Availability
NordWhisper will be rolled out gradually, initially launching on Windows, Android, and Linux, with support for additional platforms planned for future updates. Users will be able to select the protocol manually within the NordVPN app’s connection settings.
NordVPN has emphasized that the use of NordWhisper must comply with all applicable laws, agreements, and network policies. The company explicitly states that it does not encourage or support illegal activities using its VPN services.
NordVPN is one of the largest VPN providers globally, with over 7,150 servers in 118 countries. For an in-depth review of the product and its pros and cons, you can check out our latest test results here.
NordWhisper’s introduction aligns with NordVPN’s ongoing mission to provide secure, unrestricted internet access to users worldwide, adapting to increasingly sophisticated censorship and filtering techniques. As the protocol rolls out, it remains to be seen how effective it will be against the evolving tactics used to block VPNs.
