Google has announced a forthcoming security enhancement for Android 16 dubbed Advanced Protection, that brings its strongest mobile defenses as well as new protection mechanisms to the forefront.
Advanced Protection was announced today along with several new features for Android 16 as part of The Android Show: I/O Edition. Advanced Protection is now embedded directly into Android's OS, offering system-wide safeguards on supported devices. The goal: to create a seamless, low-friction way for users to activate enterprise-grade defenses with just a few taps.
The program is designed for at-risk user groups — including journalists, government officials, and public figures — but is freely accessible to any Android 16 user seeking stronger security. Once enabled, Advanced Protection locks down key aspects of device behavior, making it impossible to disable critical security features like Google Play Protect, Secure App Installation, and USB restrictions without explicit user action.
Among the standout features is Intrusion Logging, a first-of-its-kind capability that securely logs and encrypts system activity in a tamper-proof format. These logs are only accessible to the user and are intended to support forensic analysis in the event of a suspected compromise. This approach emphasizes transparency and user control, both of which are rare in mobile security at this level.

Advanced Protection also integrates tightly with core Google apps — including Chrome, Google Messages, and Phone by Google — and is designed to eventually support third-party apps that opt into the program. Android 16 also adds foundational protections like USB restriction and disabling auto-reconnect to insecure Wi-Fi networks, bolstering the device’s defenses against data exfiltration and man-in-the-middle attacks.

Google has committed to evolving the program further over the year. Future updates will include deeper integration with Scam Detection in Google’s communication apps, expanded USB protection, and additional safeguards tailored to mitigate sophisticated phishing and malware campaigns.
Android 16’s broader security enhancements support this evolution. These include advanced in-call protections to block risky actions — like sideloading or granting accessibility permissions during phone conversations with unknown contacts — and AI-powered scam detection that now flags an expanded range of fraudulent behavior. This multilayered defense model complements Advanced Protection’s role as a master switch for the platform’s most secure configuration.
