AT&T has launched Wireless Account Lock, a new security feature that allows customers to block unauthorized changes to their wireless accounts directly from the myAT&T app.
The new feature is designed to counter common attack methods such as SIM swapping and fraudulent device purchases, offering users a simple way to assert greater control over sensitive account actions.
The feature is now available for postpaid consumer wireless accounts and can be accessed through a toggle switch within the myAT&T mobile app. Once activated, Wireless Account Lock restricts high-risk changes, including updates to billing information, number port-outs, and device upgrades. Users can unlock the account at any time if they need to make changes or authorize them on behalf of family members.
For business users, a corresponding Business Account Lock is available through the administrator’s online account portal. AT&T has also extended similar protections to its prepaid wireless accounts, reinforcing its efforts across all customer segments.
The feature is part of AT&T’s broader strategy to prevent identity fraud and account hijacking, a growing threat fueled by phishing attacks, credential stuffing, and social engineering. Cybercriminals often impersonate account holders to initiate SIM swaps or gain control over a phone line, which can then be exploited to intercept verification codes or reset access to banking and email accounts.

AT&T, the largest wireless provider in the United States, says the new lock adds an important layer of friction that can block these attacks before they succeed. Unlike traditional account security, which relies primarily on passwords or verification codes, the lock must be actively toggled by the user before changes can be made, thwarting attackers who may have stolen login credentials.
In addition to Wireless Account Lock, AT&T is urging users to adopt stronger protections across their digital footprint, including multifactor authentication. Methods such as app-based authenticators, hardware security keys, and passkeys tied to biometric devices significantly reduce the likelihood of unauthorized account access, even if passwords are compromised.
While AT&T emphasizes that this feature is about preventative security, it also serves to address risks underscored by past incidents. In March 2024, AT&T confirmed that data belonging to 73 million current and former customers had been exposed in a previously undisclosed breach. Though the company stated its internal systems were not directly compromised, the risk of SIM swapping attacks targeting its customers grew exponentially.
How to enable Wireless Account Lock:
- Open the myAT&T app on your smartphone
- Navigate to your account settings
- Locate the “Account Lock” toggle and activate it
For businesses, the lock is available in the account management portal for administrators. Prepaid users should check their account access tools for a similar setting.
